Hot Springs

Hot springs are an Icelandic tradition, and the country is blessed with countless hot springs.
Some are renowned, while some are hidden gems.

The geothermal water is usually around 35-42°C, superb for winter!
I love how my skin always feels rejuvenated after, especially my tired legs.

For your short stopover, definitely visit the Blue Lagoon, which is world-famous and closest to the airport.
The Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa is artificial but it is truly an experience.

A little further South, on the way to the Geysir and Gullfoss, you will pass Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths, which is my favorite!

Less touristy and cosier, but it sits on a breathtaking lake and the experience is simply unrivaled.

Up North in the Lake Mývatn region, there is Myvatn Nature Baths, also known as Jarðböðin.

I prefer this place in summer. In winter, it gets too chilly and the water doesn't stay warm anymore.

There are plenty more situated all around Iceland, some of them run through rivers and lakes, you can read more about them here.

These are some of my other favorites:

Grettislaug on a pastel sunrise morning in winter, with snow in the background
Krossneslaug on a summer day in May
Hot tubs in Drangsnes, overlooking the sea

It is time I plan another vacation there again :)
